GUATEMALA: Parties in turmoil over perks for deputies

The three main political parties in congress - president-elect Álvaro Colom's party Unidad de la Esperanza Nacional (UNE); the Partido Patriota (PP); and the ruling coalition, Gran Nacional Alianza (Gana) - have run into serious problems after deputies ignored orders from party leaders and voted in favour of rewarding themselves additional perks through an amendment to the civil code. As well as triggering internal disputes within the parties, this vote has once again exposed the lack of party discipline and the unbridled self-interest of legislators in Guatemala.
